What it is
MMS (Massively Multilingual Speech) is Meta's research release covering more than 1,100 languages — including hundreds of African, indigenous American, and Pacific languages that no commercial vendor supports. Weights live on Hugging Face under facebook/mms-1b-all and related variants. License is research-leaning; production use requires reading the terms carefully but the linguistic coverage is otherwise unmatched. Best fit when the buyer is low-resource and indigenous language transcription where no commercial vendor offers a model. The honest caveat: quality varies dramatically across languages; non-commercial cc-by-nc license restricts production use for many. As with any open-weights release, the integrator owns hosting, scaling, and SLA — but the licensing cost is zero and the model can be fine-tuned on in-house audio.
