Project Chronos | Hitler's Last Weapon

The episode runs the full Die Glocke mythology first. In 1010, King Bhoja of central India writes engineering manuals with usable schematics for everything except his mercury-powered flying machines, whose construction he withholds 'for the sake of secrecy.' A thousand years later, Hitler — obsessed with Vedic technology and losing the atomic race — allegedly builds the bell in a mine complex in Poland: a 15-foot machine of counter-rotating mercury cylinders running on 'Xerum 525' red mercury, code-named Kronos because its real goal was not anti-gravity but sending information back in time. The scientists sicken and die, SS commander Jakob Sporrenberg is hanged having supposedly mentioned the project, around 60 project staff are executed to keep the secret, and Hans Kammler — Hitler's fixer for the V-2 and the tunnel complexes — vanishes with four contradictory death stories and no body, despite US documents listing him in American custody after he supposedly died.

The middle of the episode is the part that is actually true and genuinely strange: NASA engineer Harold Kaufman built the first ion engine in the 1960s, and it ran on mercury vapor that glowed pale blue. The SERT-2 satellite, launched in 1970 with a six-month life expectancy, ran for 11 years and restarted more than 500 times — one of NASA's most successful programs — and NASA walked away from it anyway because mercury was poisoning the people building the engines. AJ then connects the legend to the present: aerospace engineer Salvatore Pais filed Navy patents for gravity-warping craft, compact fusion and cloaking that were initially rejected as science fiction and approved in 2018 after the Navy's CTO invoked China, and in 2018 the startup Apollo Fusion pitched cheap mercury satellite engines that a whistleblower calculated would rain roughly 20 tons of mercury a year back into the atmosphere — a loophole in the Minamata Convention the UN only closed in 2022.

Then the debunk: the entire Glocke story traces to Polish journalist Igor Witkowski in 2000, who says an intelligence contact let him read Sporrenberg's interrogation transcripts but not copy them; no one else has seen them, and Sporrenberg's actual file concerns war crimes, not wonder weapons. The bugged Farm Hall transcripts of Germany's top ten physicists, released in 1992, contain no bell, no red mercury, no Kronos. The famous concrete pillars are a water-tower base. What survives scrutiny: Bhoja and his texts are real, Kammler's fate genuinely is classified and murky, mercury propulsion worked and was abandoned for its toxicity, and the Pais patents are real but unsupported by peer-reviewed evidence.
